The idea behind houses being built with unconventional materials can be for a cause or simply to exude someone’s inner creativity. Houses have been built from Legos, sand and even old shipping containers!

It was January 12, 2010, at 4:53 pm when a devastator earthquake hit Haiti. The magnitude of the earthquake was 7.0 on the Richter scale. But it did not stop there since it was followed by 30 aftershocks causing even more destruction. The aftermath of this natural catastrophe was 316, 000 dead and 1.5 million left without homes. With such devastation in sight a Montrealer of Haitian descent has come up with a project to rebuild his native country. The project consists of using shipping containers as a mean of housing. These houses can be built within ten days, and the cost to building them will range from $8000 to $10,000. Once the project is finalized, there will be 900 houses erected. Such initiative cannot prevent natural catastrophes but surely help since the houses are made to withstand hurricanes and earthquakes. Which have been on the rise in other countries due to global warming.

A lot of companies have made unconventional housing their expertise. One of these companies is Container Home Consultants. They saw a need and decided to do something about it. They used old shipping containers rearranged them the right way, voilà a home built to last. Whether it’s for a family in the Philippines or a family in the United States, they make affordable housing attainable to anyone. Considering there are 100 million people in the world that are homeless and one billion living in inadequate conditions this company is on the right path.
