How to Build Yourself a Fantastic Little Log Cabin for under $5,000

Do you ever dream of having a sweet little comfy log cabin hidden in the woods? But then think its not possible?

This is part of the classic Thoreau-inspired lifestyle most folks dream of now and then. However sometimes the romantic visions of building your own log home go out the window when you start to add up just how much it will really cost. Your dream home is now shattered as there is no way you can afford such a place without still being able to put food on the table.

The structure is where the cost lies.......which can be as high as that of equivalent conventional homes.

So how can this be changed? Well my partner and i found an alternative that may just suit you too. We like to collect any materials that we may have lying around on the land where our house was to stand. Next, by building it yourself with only the basic hand tools we have significantly reduced major cost associated with the structure of our place. So our results are, our small home cost us only about $200 to construct … with the project being so simple that we’re convinced anyone who has the willpower and basic knowledge and access can do so. Get yourself a good supply of timber and you too could build a log cabin.

First Steps

Choose a basic, non complicated design for your home cabin. The old saying of K.I.S.S ....keep it simple stupid is so important. We decided to build a home patterned after a Norwegian stabbur, and this tool some time in researching several log house styles before coming up with this. A traditional stabbur is a stonehouse built on a raised foundation of pillars and stilts, that features extra-wide eaves, which repel rain and snow. To help reduce heat loss it also includes small windows and a low door, and an upstairs loft, which serves to nearly double the available floor space.
